Gardening: the first aubergine of the year

Gardening, a set on Flickr.
I love these things so much I want to hug them; they have to be the most beautiful fruits/veggies in the world. This one was hiding at the bottom of a plant that I had forgotten I'd planted, and which is now overgrown by dahlias that I had forgotten to stake. Was picking a few flowers to put in a vase in the house and found it. There are two more ripening on the same plant, and more in the vegetable garden (where I do remember planting them).

I like aubergines almost as pets. I don't particularly like to eat them. I did find a way of cooking them last year the worked for me and will be trying it again--crisp on the outside, succulent inside, and not-at-all stringy or slimy.
