I'm so glad I was in the right place, at the right time, to see Cowboy and a THUG (or is it T.H.U.G.?) performing at the state fair. Think rap and rodeo can't work together? Think country and hip-hop just don't blend? You might be wrong!

These guys are hliarious. "Rodeo Hip-Hop". But they are talented and musical too. Makes you want to dance.

They have auditioned for America's Got Talent... watch out, America!

California State Fair 2013, a set on Flickr.
The State Fair opened yesterday, 12th July, and runs until 28th July, and includes, as always, the "Magical Midway" fairground. It's huge: several big wheels, many vomit-induciing upside-down-round-and-round-very-very-fast rides, the beautiful giant chair-o-plane; more gentle rides for children, houses full of snakes and monkeys (monkeys???), fairground food, fairground music.

There's something magical about a fairground: whether you ride the rides, try to win a giant stuffed toy, eat the food, or just simply want to run away with them when they leave.

I will be adding more fairground photos to this set on Flickr between now and the end of the fair: http://www.flickr.com/photos/alisontoon/sets/72157634618123973/

California State Fair--begins this week!

How quickly a year goes by... it's already time for the California State Fair! Rides, fun, music (17 nights of FREE concerts on the big stage, and on other stages around the fair), farm animals and gardening and crafts and art and bees and funnel cakes and everything-you-can-eat-on-a-stick.

Especially: look out for A Mile Till Dawn, who will be performing on Monday 22nd at 7 p.m.

Full details on the BigFun website: http://www.bigfun.org. The fair opens on Friday 12th July, and runs until July 28th.

What a lot of happenings in five days

Wednesday was definitely NOT a fun day. A necessary day, but really not fun. Several hours of "quality time" with my dentist. Though he is no doubt a nice guy, there are people who I would much rather spend time with, especially on a day off work. Oh well. I'd saved up the money and have done what was needed. And they had Judge Judy playing on the TV on the ceiling while I waited for the temporary crowns to be prepared. Ouch.

Thursday, 4th July, on the bus and up to Sparks, Nevada, for the Gemini Syndrome show. Brilliant! Found the Sparks independence day festivities going full throttle: beautiful classic cars, fairground rides, fun food  (I managed to eat a basketful of curly fries, see paragraph above for why this was an achievement).

In Victorian Square, in front of the cinema, there is a large paved area full of fountains and jets of water, full of kids and parents and dogs-on-leashes and even a man with a cockatoo on his shoulder... all cooling off in the heat of the desert summer.

As the evening arrived, so did more people. A marching band. A rock band, playing covers of hits from the past few decades. Families and groups of friends. Mounted policement, on horses so calm that they were like statues as children stroked their horse-knees. One was wearing over-shoes and reflective horse-bracelets.

And this young man asked to have his photo taken for my website, and his Mom said it was OK. So here he is:

Lots of happy people: friends old and new.

And then the fireworks, from the Nugget Casino and hotel. A beautiful, huge display. Lots of "oooh's" and "ahhh's" from the people watching.

Gemini Syndrome's show, after the fireworks, at The Alley. Many happy faces and brand-new new fans.

Friday morning, I tried to rearrange my Megabus ticket to leave from Sparks, instead of from Reno, but found out that "you have to board at the stop which your reservation is for". You can't change it later than 24 hours prior to departure. There's a bus stand right by the Nugget hotel, so I paid $2 and took the scenic route through Sparks and Reno to the main bus depot, near the Silver Legacy casino. And walked down the street to find a streetful of chicken wing vendors (including one that said "boar's wings"). It was a three-day wing competition: you sample the wings, and vote for the best. If I wasn't still on a vegetarian kick, it would have been interesting. Smelled wonderful!

Wandered through the casinos, saw a group of happy guys cheering at the throw of dice; blank-faced people  pressing buttons on digitized slot machines; paused by a baccarat table, couldn't make head or tail of what was going on. Then went and spent a happy hour sitting at the bus stop, reading a book, listening to Bob Marley (best of), Josh Groban (Brave, just the one song, more than once), Gemini Syndrome, Marillion.

Fell into a snooze on the bus; sitting upstairs, window-seat, watching the scenery go by, dozing... to be roused by the strong smell of smoke, just as we passed Auburn. Not a forest fire but some twerp (or couple of twerps) who thought it was OK to smoke cigarettes and skunks and to light candles on the bus. Not a little cigarette smoke, but the smell of something on fire, and then the sound of yelling pushing through the music of the iPod. It was a bit like being in a Tarantino movie from that point on down to Old Sac, but without the blood-and-gore. It did, however, involve lots of bad language worthy of  Samuel L on a bad day, a birthday cake tossed down the stairs, and the cops waiting as we disembarked in Sacramento. (Not only do you get a comfy seat on the bus, there's entertainment too!) I can only hope that the right people ended up in trouble.

And then more excitement last night, Fleetwood Mac in Sacramento.

So today? Today was a bit like a loose end with nothing to tie it to. I watered the squash plants. Scowled at the blanket of weeds. Half-heartedly whacked a few and ripped a few out, before scuttling away and hiding from the sun, indoors. Felt listless, stupid, a little unwell, overheated. Probably the aftermath of a lot of (novocaine? lignocaine? whatever dentists use). Drank lots of water to wash away the dregs. Went to dinner with Dylan at Namaste: good rice and mataar paneer and aloo gobi. Came home, vacuumed and dusted and cleaned bedroom and bathroom. Cup of tea. Sunday feels better now.

Good days off. Back to the real world tomorrow.

Fleetwood Mac, Sacramento's Sleep Train Arena, 6th July

I have always wanted to see Fleetwood Mac--mostly for Stevie Nicks--and I was kicking myself yesterday morning when I realised that neither did I have a photo pass (obviously didn't have the magic email address or phone number, cos they all ignored my requests), nor a ticket. At it was the last night of their USA tour; finale, here in Sacramento of all places (yes!!!), and we were going to miss it (Karli has had Fleetwood Mac on her "bucket list" for years. I think she heard them in the womb). Next stop Europe, and then on to Australia. and so there wouldn't be any chance of seeing them again in the near future, at least, not in the USA. Darnit.

Scalpers on Craigslist were asking hundreds and hundreds of dollars for seats with little or no view of the stage. I was still tempted.

Then a message popped up on Facebook. Sleep Train had released a few last-minute tickets! Quick, quick, to TicketMaster... and then there we were, Karli and I, in our lower-level seats with a great view of the stage, reasonable-if-not-cheap price tickets, with big grins on our faces.

No supporting act. Just pure Fleetwood Mac. More than twenty songs. Two encores. Karli and I were down on the floor for the last encore, and Security were dancing with us.

Stevie is still beautiful. She'll always be beautiful.

So many wonderful songs: Sara, The Chain, Landslide, Rhiannon, Gypsy, Silver Springs...  Go Your Own Way, and the crowd went berzonkers!

When I listen to Fleetwood Mac, I often skip straight to the Stevie songs. Just because they are my favourites and I can't wait to hear them again. So over the years, I'd forgotten some of the others. But just how could I have forgotten, "Tusk"? That's one of the best songs ever. Won't forget it again.

Lindsey Buckingham's solos--"Big Love", "I'm So Afraid"(?) were breathtaking. Truly demonstrated why Mick Fleetwood asked him to join Fleetwood Mac--and allowed him to bring his girlfriend along--as the story goes. And why John and Christine McVie did, too. There's still a connection between Lindsey and Stevie--at least, on stage, in the music. The chemistry is still there. It hangs in the air. And the songs are magical.

Thank you, Fleetwood Mac. That was wonderful.

Dear Mr. Mayor (about the new Sacramento Arena)

Dear Mr. Mayor Kevin Johnson,

I really appreciate what you are doing for Sacramento--and that we'll soon have a new arena, downtown, in the place that it should be.

But.

When you work with the architects on the design, can I ask you to take one thing into consideration?

SOUND!

I was at the Fleetwood Mac concert last night (it was wonderful, by the way, apart from the topic of this post). And at Bob Dylan's show, a while back, and a few others. And I was looking forward to seeing Josh Groban (even though his song choices are often a little too "easy listening" for me, he has an amazing voice... but... the show's at Arco and yes, I know it's called Sleep Train Arena now, but "Arco" just doesn't go away, and I really don't know if I can bear to hear that wonderful voice at the current arena).

The sound at Arco/Sleep Train Arena sucks. For concerts. It's perfect for basketball. But for concerts, it truly... sucks.

The thing that makes the arena wonderful for basketball--the circular echo--spoils all music. There's a loud echo coming in from stage left about a second after the performers make the sound. Throughout the show.

It took about half last night's show for my brain to somehow filter out, and ignore, the echo.

So please: when the designers and the architects are working on the new arena, if it truly is to be a multipurpose arena, with both sports and shows, have them build in something that considers ACOUSTICS. Maybe some sort of switchable materials that provide optimum sound levels based on the event that's being hosted. There has to be an app for that these days.

(And to those of you who organize shows: consider hosting more at places that have been designed for performance. Such as Sacramento's Community Theater or the Memorial Auditorium. No, they are not the same capacity as the current arena, but some of the arena shows are not filled to capacity anyway.)

That's it. My ears are still buzzing, and I have to write about the wonderful Fleetwood Mac show. Rant over. Can now focus on the music, and not on the screwed-up acoustics.

Thank you for listening,

Alison

Gemini Syndrome, making sparks in Sparks: fireworks on 4th July!

I didn't expect to have the opportunity to see Gemini Syndrome again any time soon. A week ago, I hadn't seen anything planned anywhere close to Sacramento. But of course, I'd been out of the country and had missed the announcement that they were going to be playing a free show, up in Sparks, near Reno, on July 4th (is there a town better named for 4th July fireworks? Sparks, for Pete's sake! And know I don't know who Pete is. He was probably there though. A lot of people were in Sparks that day.)

And that was also before the Aftershock announcement... they'll be there, too, in Sacramento!

I really dislike driving up I-80. No... to be honest, it's driving DOWN I-80 that I dislike. All those "brake-failure" ramps on the right-hand side, narrow gravel tracks that are somehow supposed to slow and stop those monster-heavyweight Mack or White or whatever trucks when their brakes fail. Because if there are signs, and ramps, like that, you know that their brakes DO fail often enough for the ramps to be built and for the signs to be put up, and that's what I'm thinking driving down that steep windy mountain freeway with an overtaking giant truck to my left and another giant trucks grille inches from my rear-view mirror with all that trucks weight pushing the monster closer and closer and closer so that when the brakes fail like they of course will he'll squish my little truck like an ant under a 250lb guy's foot just before he reaches the next narrow gravel go-here-if-your-brakes-fail ramp (like he'll have control over steering at that point)... Well you get my drift. (You ever see Patrick Swayze/Meatloaf in "Black Dog"? Don't watch before driving down from Reno. Seriously.) I really really don't like driving down I-80. So there wasn't really much chance of getting up to Reno/Sparks for the show.

But then I found the Megabus. That's another story, for later, but it's an air-conditioned comfy seat all the way up to Reno/Sparks, for a few dollars, in comfort. And like on a plane, you put your trust in the pilot, and relax. And there I was, in Sparks, in time for the Gemini Syndrome show.

The Alley is a small, bar-like venue, just down the street from Victoria Square, a couple of minutes walk from the Nugget casino and hotel. For those of you from Sacramento: more like the Blue Lamp than the Ace of Spades, except the stage is at the back end of the room, away from the street, rather than at the front. Similar size, shape and capacity.

But boy, was it dark! I promise to never, ever complain about the Ace of Spades' lighting (or lack of) again. Seriously. (Though the Ace of Spades could light shows better, really!).

Ignore me. This is the photographer talking. We yearn for light. Good light. Light that we can make behave. So that it's easy. Creativity is never easy. You have to earn it. (I'm just thanking Jade, again, for the 50mm f1.8 lens she gave me for Christmas. Would have been lost without it!) (If performers work hard, why the heck should the photographers expect it to come easy. It won't. You have to fight the light out.)

First act was Scattered, a local band, who had won the opening act slot by votes from fans, through Rock 104.5, Reno's Rock Station, http://www.kdot.com/, who had organized the concert--another "Freeloaders Fest". (Look out for more of those at smaller venues in Reno and Sparks). Photos from Scattered's set are on Flickr.

Gemini Syndrome--you know I love these guys. They'll go far. They already are... travelling far, touring all over the country. New album is coming soon. Previews available at http://geminisyndrome.com and well, you know how to search and/or use iTunes by now. YouTube channel, too.

Technical problems at the beginning of the show. Restarted song three, four? times? Brian gave us a great drum lesson while the guitars were sorted. And then the show really began...

Look... and listen. Loud. They are Gemini Syndrome, and they'll be in Sacramento for Aftershock. I'll be there. I think you should be, too. Get your tickets here:  http://aftershockconcert.com/

Aftershock lineup, all announced and heck yes, there are women this time

AFTERSHOCK 2013    <--- see here for all the info!

Not only are my last-year's favourite Aftershock performers, Gemini Syndrome, (who by-the-way are playing tomorrow night in Sparks, Nevada) making an appearance at this year's two-day-plus-Friday-evening bigger-and-better Aftershock festival, there are also going to be women. On stage. Yes, indeed.

Brilliant!

(Not that I have anything against all-guy bands, far from it. But you have to read my posting about Women in Rock to understand why this is worth mentioning with regard to Aftershock.)

See you there!

Summertime...

Lots of things to do, places to go, music to hear this week--and for the foreseeable future:

- Fleetwood Mac at Sacramento's Sleep Train Arena on 6th
- Steel Pulse at Ace of Spades, also Sacramento, also on 6th, darnit! I want to see them both!

And then, next week, the California State Fair begins, with lots of concerts. The fair runs from the 12th to 28th July. Remember last year?

And very soon after that, really close to home at Sunrise Marketplace in Citrus Heights, the Sunrise at Night's concert series too. Lots of long hot summer evenings this year!  (Remember? The genius idea of holding concerts in the shopping mall parking lot. Close to home and no problem parking. Brilliant! Remember Blondie last year? Lots more great acts lined up for this summer's series. Do you have your tickets yet?)

And Aftershock!  Don't forget Aftershock!!!

But before all that... I'm heading up the hill and over the other side, to see Gemini Syndrome in Reno.   It's a free show, after the fireworks. It's going to be cool.

I'm heading up to Reno because I really, really like Gemini Syndrome. And because the idea of a free show for the people on the people of America's day is something special. And because I'm between Great Danes, because I'm a free spirit, and I can do what the heck I want, when I want, just as long as the boss says it's OK.

Will I see you there?
