This young man, and the "young" part is literal, he is all of 21 years old, held thousands (tens of thousands?) of people entranced, spellbound, and dancing, late Sunday at TBD Fest. Huge crowd, beautiful lights, and music that moved your feet, arms, everything for you.

Heavier than pop, though Madeon's first real success was a mashup called "Pop Culture", back in 2011, you know, when he was just REALLY YOUNG. Darn fantastic production that. Take a listen if you haven't already. Today, it's been heard 31-and-a-half MILLION times on YouTube. (Pop trivia--see if you can name all the songs. According to Wikipedia, there are close to forty songs in the mashup.)

On Sunday, Madeon (real name, Hugo Pierre Leclerq, from Nantes, France) kept the crowd enthralled for over an hour. The music was great, the lights, fantastic.

Madeon is on tour in the USA: several dates to come in Texas, then Vegas, and finishing with a little place called Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, New York.

New single from Blackjack Billy is out now: Night Light is less rock that earlier songs, but it's rather beautiful. Hear it on iTunes and get this one playing on your local radio station. It's going to be hard to remove from your ear once you have heard it. Earworm warning!!!

Papa Roach, Reno, on the road but not far from home, and tonight, we're all family

One thing was really clear during Papa Roach's show at the Lawlor Event Center in Reno, NV last week: they are much loved by the local family, and that showed in the entire performance. (And by "local", I mean Vacaville in Northern California stretching through Sacramento and right up to Reno, as there were family and friends who had made the jump up to see Jacoby Shaddix and the band, as well as the truly-local-down-the-street Reno fans.)

A happy family, and for one evening, we were all within the embrace, the whole crowd, everyone in the audience, and maybe all of Reno, too.

I last saw Papa Roach at Aftershock in 2013, in Sacramento, on home turf, under the hot, hot September sun. It was a love-fest, until, of course, the Wall of Death, when the crowd splits in two and then runs into each other. For those readers who haven't (yet) been to a metal festival or a Papa Roach show, the Wall of Death is like a circle pit, but in straight lines. OK... That description doesn't help? Think huge Black Friday shopping crowds waiting for shops to open on opposite sides of the same street, with doors unlocked at exactly the same moment, and everyone running to feed the shopping frenzy right NOW. That image work? That's the Wall of Death, but the feeling is much more satisfying than a cheap TV: the crowd divides, like the parting of the sea, and then... SMASH.

If you think for a moment that the band doesn't care about people being hurt, forget that. It's all good fun, intense, good, fun. At one point Jacoby noticed someone in the audience needed help, and stopped, mid-song, until they were helped out and able to give the metal horns salute to show all was well: back to the crazy crowd that is a Papa Roach show.

(Metal/rock/core crowds are so much fun to be part of... I only saw a couple of crowdsurfers all weekend at TBDfest, and one of them was a woman who had fainted and was being lifted over the barrier, sorta unintentionally crowdsurfing... just not the same crowd as the Papa Roach and Five Finger Death Punch audience, though they were just a little more restrained than usual in Reno!)

But it wasn't all mosh pits and heavy: a lovely acoustic version of Scars, played from the crowd, and Maria Brink of In This Moment joined the band on stage for Gravity. (But I'd like to bet that for much of the audience, the earworm the next morning, even after all these years, is still Last Resort... it's kinda persistent.)

The latest album, and ninth studio album, from Papa Roach, F.E.A.R, was released early this year and is available in both CD and vinyl from the band's website, as well as your usual music outlets.

The tour with Five Finger Death Punch continues throughout the USA and then on to Europe. Catch this tour--you won't regret it, but you might if you miss it.

The spirit of TBDfest: music, art, performance and that something special

Before I post any more musician photos, before I write any reviews of the performances, I want to say thank you--thank you, to you, the people of TBD. To the organizers, for bringing this event to live once again, on probably the dustiest site this side of the Sahara, for making it work, and for making it a place for so many people to have fun, play music, dance and enjoy a fantastic weekend. I hope that you see that all the hard work and stress and sleepless nights were worth it, again. Thank you!

You had fun. You were well behaved and only crowd-surfed when you fainted and someone had to lift you out of the crowd (did I mention it was 200 degrees farenheit???) You didn't fight, as far as I could see, and you came in peace. You moved like the ocean and you supported each and every one of the musicians, and then you rode your bikes back home in the Sacramento midnight, because that's who you are and that's what you do.

What do I say? You all know already how much we love Five Finger Death Punch. You're not going to get a blow-by-blow, song-by-song analysis of the show here: I bought tickets the day they went on sale so that we could be there, photo or press pass or not, and really didn't expect to shoot the whole show. But I tell you, MAGIC HAPPENS around these guys.

Appreciation for veterans and for the kids at the show. A pantomime moment when Jason Hook steals up the stage and Ivan doesn't see ("He's behind you!!!"). All the hits, all the words you learned not to say but can't resist singing along anyway; wonderful music, superb musicianship, terrific show and oh... that voice.

I am still smiling, days later, along with, I expect, everyone in the audience at the Lawlor Event Center, Reno. I don't think they get to see many metal bands in Reno. Maybe more big bands should stop there on their way around the USA. It's only a couple of hours "up the hill" from here in Sacramento, and it's a nice alternative to battling Bay Area traffic.

In This Moment, a show in Reno, an "aha!" moment... and a new single available today

Third time seeing In This Moment live (if you count the webcast from last year's Knotfest), and it's taken until now for me to really appreciate the blending of music and sheer entertainment. Third time's a charm, right? (This time, in Reno, Nevada, touring with Five Finger Death Punch, Papa Roach, and From Ashes To New.)

What made it click? That "aha!" moment: knowing that at least one of these perfomers has pushed right through the physical and emotional pain barrier to do what they love best. Oh... and a great visual and theatrical show, of course!

In This Moment on stage appears to be very much the Maria Brink show, front and center, but In This Moment is the entire band: Chris Howarth and Randy Weitzel on guitar, Travis Johnson on bass, Tom Hane on drums, and two lovely dancers. Gaga-esque, indeed, but not pop, not by a long, heavy, metal, bargepole.

New single, "Big Bad Wolf", is out now, and the tour continues: catch them if you can!

I think by now all those who read this publication know that we love Five Finger Death Punch. So it was a given that we took the trip up the hill to Reno, Nevada, for the closest date on their current tour. Also on the bill, Papa Roach and In This Moment, and I'll be posting more about their sets soon.

But we'd not seen From Ashes To New before. First on the bill, and an early show: the Lawlor Event Center is within the Reno university campus, and I suspect that many of the students came straight from classes to line up outside the venue. It's not often that a major metal/rock tour lands in Reno: the show was in competition with Ricky Martin at one of the casinos (sorry, Ricky, FFDP won, hands down, straight flush).

I like Reno. Sure, it's a casino town, and it's gritty, like the high desert that surrounds it. But it's embedded in beautiful and remote countryside, and just a few miles from stunning, Lake Tahoe. The people are friendly, kind, and there's a surprising range of vegetarian, organic and yummy food, and more traditional martial arts stores in Reno than I've seen since leaving France. Step outside the casinos, go to midtown. There are inexpensive buses, Uber has just started service there, and it's a fun city to explore.

But back to the concert. Matt Brandyberry of From Ashes To New was kind enough to have a chat before the show, about the band's rapid growth from a couple of songs on YouTube to opening a huge tour. Yes, it really is less than two years since the band began: Matt putting songs together with friends, frustrated with waiting for a band to work, a strong personal philosophy of proving yourself through persistance and hard work ("Treat every day like a football game. Yesterday doesn't matter. Tomorrow doesn't matter. This game, this moment, matters."), people hearing the songs, Octane radio picking up the message, a couple of tours with Hollywood Undead and POD and voila... here they are, opening a huge tour with FFDP and Papa Roach, gaining fans in every city, and leaving the audience wanting more: blending elements of hip-hop, rap, metal and rock, two strong vocalists, six guys on stage, jumps, energy, huge sound.

It wasn't planned. From Ashes To New didn't first create a band, then write songs, find a label, get published, then tour. The band members had all played with other bands in and around Lancaster, Pennsylvania, but nothing had really come of it. From Ashes To New came together somewhat organically and clicked. (Matt said, "Chris didn't want to sing. I had to break him." I guess he was talking about breaking a singer like you break a thoroughbred horse, because boy, can he sing!

"Ontario"
"Ontario, Canada?"
"That's what we thought at first, too. Boy that would be expensive. Three band members with DUIs, and we're going to Canada? That's $5,000 each!  No... it's Ontario near Los Angeles!"  Happy face.

Talk to Matt Brandyberry and you talk with a young man who has pushed through and proven himself through hard work and persistance, whether it be on the sports field or life challenges. That's the backbone of From Ashes To New's lyrics, and the bands name too. He's frustrated with how things that should be serious--like schoolkids committing suicide--have today become somewhat accepted and the norm. That, in itself, is unacceptable. He's frustrated with seeing people give up, lose faith in themselves. Every one of us can prove themselves. Never give up. Never...

Will be a good show tonight at the Ace of Spades. Atreyu headline, supported by Unearth, Wovenwar... and Malaki.

Atreyu were in town last year, at Aftershock Festival, their first show after reuniting. And the crowd went wild!!!!!

I think the show is sold out: there are no tickets available on the venue website, so if you haven't already bought your ticket: tough. (I looked on craigslist, there are none for sale in Sacramento but at 8.30 am, there were a couple available in Grass Valley, but who knows if that's up-to-date.

Would have been good fun to photograph another band with a strong female vocalist--they are far and few between. Here's an idea of what to expect from Malaki--a good mix of heavy, and not:

From the start of the evening with From Ashes To New (and you'll hear more about these guys, on here and in your ears, very soon), through the theatrical extravaganza that is In This Moment, to a joyful and exciting Papa Roach show to the one-and-only Five Finger Death Punch, last night's show at the Lawlor Event Center in Reno, Nevada, was a roaring train of metal and rock energy.

Three new albums: two hits, one miss (reviewing Five Finger Death Punch, Bring Me The Horizon, and Iron Maiden)

The three biggest new albums to reach my ears during the past week or so have been:

- Got Your Six, Five Finger Death Punch
- That's the Spirit, Bring Me The Horizon
- The Book of Souls, Iron Maiden

Got Your Six: everything you expect from a FFDP album: angry-yet-melodic, intense, soaring, heavy, strong, violent, hurting... and overlaid with Ivan Moody's wonderful vocals. While on the first listening of The Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of Hell vol. 2's "Cold" immediately took its place on my best-ever-songs list, Got Your Six is taking a few more listenings to pick out one song above the rest... possibly "Digging My Own Grave" will be a personal favourite... this is a uniformly-good album. "They are all perfect" (name that movie). There is definitely a more even intensity and form to Got Your Six than the previous albums--can't say it's a "happy" album, but it is upbeat. Positively-intense. In a FFDP way.

We're off to Reno tomorrow night to see FFDP playing these songs live, together with Papa Roach, In This Moment, and From Ashes To New. Awesome. Want to join us? I think there might be a ticket left. Maybe. Can't wait to see them again.

That's The Spirit: Bring Me The Horizon taking the journey even further into melodic metal than with Sempiternal, Bring Me The Horizon have produced another album that can be listened to over, and over, and over again. I love hearing the forward movement in this band's music: they are progressing and growing and taking the right path for them. They are not standing still.  As mentioned in an earlier review, screamo just takes you so far... loving hearing Oli singing as well as screaming.

Their set at Aftershock next month is top-of-my-list to see. Don't miss it--and don't forget to check out "Live at Wembley", as well as That's The Spirit.

The Book of Souls: this one is my #fail. Not a fail of the album by any means, and not in any way a criticism of Iron Maiden: it's definitely a major work which will be very much appreciated by their fans. It's a fail on my part: I've never seen (or heard) what everyone else raves about, and I will leave this review to those who are saying how amazing and genius this album is. I think it comes down to the vocals: I like the intros to each of the songs, but once they really get started, I want to hear the next and see if it's any more compelling (and sung in tune). I know I would enjoy seeing Iron Maiden live, but it's like Yes... I enjoy the album artwork more than I enjoy the contents, and every now and then I have to listen to them, to remind myself why I don't.

Watching "Hand of God" yet? Take a listen to Fantastic Negrito

If you have watched Amazon's series, Hand of God, starring Ron Perlman (i.e., Clay of The Sons of Anarchy),  you might have wondered about the opening music. It grabbed me immediately, while I had to wait for the final few minutes of the show pilot to be hooked on the show.

The song is "An Honest Man" by Fantastic Negrito, aka Xavier Dphrepaulezz, from Oakland, California. "Blues with a punk attitude", "Black roots music for everyone". I certainly want to hear more.

You can purchase his self-titled EP on iTunes. Also, he is one of the guests who will appear on the upcoming Blackalicious album, Imani Vol 1--out later this week!

Crowdfunding, prereleases, where it all began... and where it's going next. Marillion pre-order begins today!

You know how so many musicians these days are offering pre-orders to fans, funding their releases and enabling sales of music direct to fans? I bet you have a few albums in your collection that you bought that way. Well... these guys started all that, back in 1997... yep that long ago.
