Kosha Dillz

(If you can't laugh at yourself, how can you laugh at anything? That sentiment is very representative of the British sense of humour... and I'm learning, of others', too.)

I tried for a photo pass for Matisyahu the other night, but after a long and drawn-out email exchange, it was left hanging and there was no photo authorisation for me... but I did have a pass for Street Urchinz, so was there at Ace of Spades, armed with cameras, happily covering the Urchinz, but not allowed to shoot the headliner.

This guy wandered up to me wearing Matisyahu passes. We chatted: he didn't have a photo pass for me. He did, however, give me a CD. I couldn't read the label in the venue, too dark for that.

Matisyahu started (after a long break, and a very-drawn-out light-and-smoke intro). I could see and hear that it was going to be a very entertaining and interesting show. However, I had camera trigger-finger. How to stay inside the venue, with cameras, with zoom, and not take pictures? No pass equals no photos. Finger itches to shoot. Not a good situation. And heck, I had to work in the morning. Really early.

So I left. Went to the truck. Put the CD in the CD player and drove home along J street and Fair Oaks.

It's an EP: "Gina and the Garage Sale", to be exact. Cracked me up. Drove home with a stupid grin.

My favourites are track 7., "Span-Hebrish (Ech Ani Olech)", and track 8, "The Sweatpants Song". What a balagan :-)  Brilliant, seriously!

(Thank you Kosha Dillz!)

That's all I'm saying. You have to listen to it all yourself.

My Jerusalem, and my Jerusalem...

Before I saw My Jerusalem live last year, and listened to their music... I wondered about their name. Because my Jerusalem is a special place: somewhere wish everyone on this planet, regardless of religion or beliefs or origins, could experience at least once in their lives.

Today, I read an article in Highlight Magazine, which explains: Jeff Klein visited Jerusalem... and wanted his new band to have the same spiritual feeling that he'd experienced.

"I'm not talking about religion: I'm talking about spirituality."

Deja-vu.

Here's my Jerusalem, on an obsolete, very-old-and-outdated website :  http://www.tittletattletales.com/oldserver/israel/jerusalm.html   "And then there was Jerusalem..."  Written after my third visit to Israel in eighteen months, before my sister moved from Tel Aviv to the flowering desert.

I think I'm ready to visit my Jerusalem again... or maybe My Jerusalem.

Next year, in Jerusalem.

Last night was my first opportunity to see Street Urchinz with their new lineup: in addition to Tommy (vocals and guitar), and Doug (guitar), the members are Jake (bass), Alan (drums) and Russ (keyboards). They played to a full house at the Ace of Spades as the only opening act for Matiyasu, and you'll see the crowd's reaction from the photos.

It's really good to see a young band developing before your eyes... see earlier reviews and photos here, here and here!

Dave Koz and friends, Sunrise at Night, Citrus Heights

Last night was the opening concert of this year's Sunrise at Night concert series: Dave Koz & Friends; very very smooth sax-filled jazz, and playing smooth-jazz versions of many songs which had a big horn section in the original version, from the new album, "Summer Horns".

Partnered by Mindi Abair, Gerald Albright, and Richard Elliot, the audience were treated to an aural show of sublimely-smooth sax playing: the band played a two-part show, with no supporting act. After the intermission, the saxophonists reappeared, not on stage, but by playing their way through the crowd to take a position in front of the stage. Mobbed by happy fans, they continued playing!

Sometimes when "shooting"a show, I find myself distracted, or rather attracted, by one member of the band, photographically. This time, it was the guitar player who was mostly hidden in the shadows. Something special there.

He is Randy Jacobs, and his bio and musically history speak for themselves. He is, indeed, something special.
